Eros and Psyche

digital photography, 2018

The love story- perhaps even tragedy- of the mortal girl Psyche and god of love Eros has been popularized throughout history as a tale of passion, doubt, and perseverance. This classic Greek myth has been traditionally told as a romance between immortal man and deified woman. In this series however, the idyllic tale is manipulated to focus on the relationship and trials of two gay women.

This work serves as a reclamation of lesbian love and a way to illuminate the often invisible lives of sapphic women. Gay women must endure internalized homophobia, identity-based insecurity, and the dangers of idealizing or rushing into relationships. Femme lesbians in particular face objectification by the surrounding heterosexual, patriarchal culture. Eros and Psyche is an exploration of how pain shapes romance experienced under the influence of heteronormative society.
