endear

oil on masonite, 2020

Developing an understanding of my identity as a lesbian has been a solitary journey: No physical spaces for camaraderie, few visible role models, a community overlooked (at best) by larger society. This absence of lesbians drove me to make the portraits in endear. We desire connection, we yearn for appreciation, we deserve to feel pride. But often “lesbian” is an amalgamation of experiences that we cannot always fully understand or have the opportunity to share.

For some, the little LESBIAN pocket book is just a handful of many ideas grappled with, thoughts held dear or things that continue to be questioned and revisited. For others, it is a chance to think critically and be engaged, to move forward with respect and empathy.
